The Reading Section
The reading section includes two reading passages, each approximately 700 words long, with 10 questions per passage. Completing this section takes about 35 minutes.
The Listening Section
In this section, you'll listen to lectures and conversations, both of which use language commonly heard on university campuses.
• 3 lectures: each lasting 3-5 minutes, some involving classroom discussions, with 6 questions per lecture.
• 2 conversations: each lasting 3 minutes, with 5 questions per conversation.
You can take notes during the test to help answer the questions. Completing the listening section takes about 36 minutes.
The Speaking Section
The TOEFL iBT Speaking section evaluates your ability to speak English effectively in academic settings. It consists of four tasks that mirror real-life situations you might encounter in and outside of class.
• Task 1: Independent speaking task where you draw from your own ideas, opinions, and experiences.
• Tasks 2–4: Integrated speaking tasks that require you to combine your English skills (listening and speaking or listening, reading, and speaking).
You will have 15–30 seconds to prepare for each response and 45–60 seconds to speak. Your responses are recorded and the speaking section takes about 16 minutes.
The Writing Section
There are two writing tasks:
• Task 1: Integrated writing task (20 minutes), where you read a short passage and listen to a brief lecture, then write a response.
• Task 2: Writing for an academic discussion (10 minutes), where you present and support an idea in an online class discussion.
You will type your responses using a computer keyboard. The writing section takes about 29 minutes to complete.
